Falls on Stairways
Serious injuries can result when someone slips or trips on a stairway; especially when they end up falling down the flight of stairs. Stairway accidents happen because of a number of issues:
- Broken or cracked stairs
- Missing or defective non-slip strips
- Liquids on the stairway
- Lack of handrails
- Improper lighting
- Uneven steps.
Sometimes stairs can’t be seen because of something called optical confusion – the colors are such that it is hard to see that there is a step. For that reason, property owners place reflective strips or other markings on the steps to make them visible. If these are missing, or worn away, someone could miss the step and fall with serious injuries resulting.
Even where there is no negligence, property owners often carry insurance that covers medical expenses of people who are injured on their property. This insurance will not, however, pay for pain and suffering unless the owner was negligent.
